LMHS academic team continues winning tradition

Posted 5th February 2007, mid-afternoon

Little Miami High School's Academic Team is synonymous with success. With eight straight winning seasons, it's a tradition that cannot die. That's because these competitors aren't stumped by questions like: "What is the equivalent resistance of a 5 Ohm resistor and a 20 Ohm resistor connected in parallel?" "Which constant represents the amount of charge on one mole of electrons?" or "What is the name of Beethoven's only opera?"

Rather, they welcome the mental challenge. The team, which has seen high success in recent years, is enjoying their ninth consecutive winning season. They have seen over 300 wins in the last 12 years, and the varsity team was named Fort Ancient Valley Conference league champions in 2001, 2002, 2003 and 2004.

"We have a winning tradition at Little Miami. We have been one of the top teams in the league for the past 9 years " said high school math teacher Roger Levo, who has coached the team for 13 years. "I believe we have a chance to win the league tournament."

Armed with buzzers, four team members go head-to-head against other area schools in four rounds, answering questions about American and English literature, mathematics, world and American history, fine arts, life and physical sciences, U.S. government and world geography.

On February 28 the varsity team will compete in the FAVC tournament at Little Miami High School starting at 4:30 pm. "We invite community members to come watch our matches," said Mr. Levo. "If they enjoy watching Jeopardy, they will enjoy watching our students compete."

This season, Little Miami matched wits with teams from Northwest, Edgewood, Wilmington, Kings, Turpin, Ross, Mt. Healthy and Norwood.

Team members for the 2006-07 season include: Kate Cook, Greg Pace, Emily Harris, Brittney Crist, Daniel Doughman, Nellie Neal, Josh Sanders, Tim Necamp, Micah Wahnbaeck, Katie Jones, Scott Jones, Ashley Tieman, Abby Diss, Nat McVey, Ryan Harrison, Marissa Kruthaup, Zac Cook, Ryan Longuir, Samantha Sprandel, Rebecca Doughty, Scott Hamilton, Stacey Taylor, Anna Kimball, Melissa Capella, Dorothy Johnson, Ryan Boos, Emily Naylor, Liz Klein, Laura Plikerd, Andrew Evans, Julia Leister, Chris Nierstheimer, Kurt Woerlen, Doug Hasse, Ben Overberg, Andrew Burt, Rob Grote, Jon Cecil, Megan Nichols, Clayton Allison, Emily Schelhom, Brittany Rapp, Brittany Ralph and Kevin Perkins. The team is aided with the help of Coaches Roger Levo, Ron Maupin and Deb Haisley.
